Owner Reinette Wiechers came up with the idea of an online food community when she became a regular at her local food markets and realised that there was no online outlet for the small producers you’ll find at these markets. Voila, introducing Feast Food Market.

From gooseberry balsamic vinegar to sundried tomato mustard, you’ll be drooling on the keyboard over the many weird and wonderful foodie finds at Feast Food Market. We chatted to Reinette about her own personal favourite places and things.

What would your 10-year-old self say about the job you do right now?
“My 10-year-old self loved baking and helping my mom in the kitchen, so looking back this 10-year-old was already a foodie, albeit not formally. I once won 1st prize at my primary school’s entrepreneurship day for making handmade goods. So despite some detours, my 10-year-old self was already interested in the 2 things which I am passionate about – food and entrepreneurship. I think she would say I am on the right track.”

What’s the absolute best thing and the absolute pits about your job?
“Best thing is to feature, introduce and connect South Africans to the amazing specialty and artisan food products and their producers and enable them to easily buy them through online shopping. I also love seeing their products come to alive through amazing photography. The absolute pits – nothing I loathe too much! Resizing images and data-capture…Yawn!”

 

What is a food aroma you love?
“Cinnamon…makes me think of pancakes, rainy days and thunderstorms.”

Is there is food trend that you wish would go away?
“Not really, I tend to explore new food trends and find them interesting. I do wish some of the interesting niche health foods would be more affordable!”

Favourite spot for lunch?
“Anywhere with a view! I love the picnics at the Roundhouse and Cape Point Vineyards.”

Where is your go-to place to shop for food or ingredients?
“Woolies and Spar (I know…boring but its closest) and exploring markets for indie food.Chinese supermarkets for Asian ingredients and looking at all the weird things they have there! Raith Deli for gourmet German hot dog ingredients.”

Favourite ingredient to cook with right now?
“Quinoa, can’t get enough of it!”

Favourite food or wine hero?
“Yotam Ottolenghi hands down – looooove his salads.”

If you were a flavour of ice cream, you would be… (and why?)
“Chocolate! Vanilla is too boring, chocolate is decadent and stable at the same time.”

If you had R1000 to spend, where would you go or what would you cook? (and drink)
“The Test Kitchen as a treat.”

If you had to eat one food for the rest of your life it would be?
“Tough one – I would not survive long without some sort of protein. Will have to go with lamb.”

Your last supper would be (don’t forget the drinks!)
“Loaded question! Summer or winter, breakfast lunch or dinner? If I HAD to choose. I once had a truffle oil fillet steak with rocket at a restaurant and it was magnificent and very memorable. So I would say that with some interesting (Ottolenghi) salads – shared with friends of course.”
