Step-by-step: The ultimate Braai Day braaibroodjie

For those of our friends in the Northern hemisphere who might not be familiar with the classic South African concept of a ‘braaibroodjie’ or bbq-sandwich, here is a quick refresher course. Yes, it is basically a cheese and tomato sandwich melted on the grill but it’s so much more.

It’s an institution. It’s a source of great debate. Do you add chutney (Mrs Balls, another SA institution)? Do you butter the inside and outside of the bread? Which cheese is best? Red or white onion? Let the chops get cold or do them first?

This Braai Day – or Heritage Day – we say, find your own way to do your ‘braaibroodjie’. We like ours with the tangy taste of Pronto Mama’s slow-roasted tomatoes:

Pronto Mama Slow-Roasted Tomato Braaibroodjie

Makes 4-6

8-12 slices of white or brown bread (makes 4-6 sandwiches)
1 red onion, sliced
Portobello mozzarella cheese, grated
Pronto Mama Slow-roasted tomatoes with olive & rosemary
Rocket leaves
Butter or margarine
Salt & pepper to taste

Spread your bread with butter or margarine, Pronto Mama sauce, top with grated cheese, rocket and red onion.

Grill over medium coals for about 10 minutes.
